Somewhere Queer: Southern LGBTQ Pride

Over the summer of 2018, I traveled across the South with a partner, Brennan Lewis, documenting LGBTQ Pride celebrations in small Southern communities. We travelled to:

Dowelltown, TN

Salisbury, NC

Huntington, WV

Florence, Alabama

Hendersonville, NC

We conducted over 30 interviews about rurality, Southern identity, and LGBTQ pride. We worked in collaboration with leaders at each site to identify interviewees and to write accurate stories.

Excerpts from interviews and short audio pieces are featured on our site.

Somewhere Queer is a collaboration of Monique Laborde and Brennan Lewis. This project was funded by the UNC Chapel Hill Robertson Scholars Leadership Program and the Duke University John Hope Franklin Student Documentary Award.
